IMPORTANT EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: NEW EVENT DATES FOR AUSTRALIAN HEALTHCARE WEEK – NOW RUNNING ON 17 – 18 MARCH .
Event connects medicine, biology, big data and technology to generate opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and collaboration. Over researchers, clinicians and postgraduate students from 30 different schools, centres and institutes across UNSW recently came together to share their experience and challenges across the field of bioinformatics. The event aimed to showcase the research happening across the university, connect different skill sets, and enhance opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
With ample opportunity for professional matchmaking, researchers gave over 22 short, sharp presentations to their colleagues. Presenters highlighted their research interests, areas of challenge and opportunities for collaboration. Half of the attendees submitted a slide to be displayed during the matchmaking lunch indicating an interest and need to collaborate in the field. A relatively new field of study, bioinformatics combines elements of biology and computer science.
It underpins and enables research across the life sciences.
2020 T1 UNSW Medicine HDR Speed Mentoring Workshop
The annual “Business Buzz” at the ASB allows top local and international students to engage face-to-face with successful alumni and industry experts to talk about career options, personal aspirations and the realities of working life after university — in minute “speed dating” type meetings. It’s one of many ways ASB connects its students to the real world of business success — and with other high achieving students from all over the world. The ASB received a maximum A1 ranking in Australian Government quality assessments for , as well as the maximum five-year EQUIS accreditation, the internationally-recognised quality standard for higher education.
That reputation is built on a continuous program of improvement and innovation, which means that ASB can respond effectively to changes in the business environment to ensure graduate skills match the demands of a globalised job market, and reflect the shift of economic growth to the Asian region. That determination is underpinned by UNSW’s core goal of producing “global citizens” ready for a globalised economy and workforce.
The school is currently implementing its ASB strategic vision, which was formulated after applying the same rigorous evaluation processes that the corporate world uses to help companies stay on top.

Anthony Roberts said. During the event, students will need to showcase why they are a good fit for their preferred company via an elevator pitch to senior executives and founders of participating businesses. Conversely, each of the start-ups and companies will also get an opportunity to deliver a pitch promoting themselves as the place to be for students looking to kick start their MedTech career.
Students represent a wide variety of courses and degrees including biomedical engineering, life sciences, pharmacology, mathematics, science, commerce and law. Data61 CEO, Adrian Turner, said the event was an excellent example of government, university, industry and research working together to build the innovation pipeline.
Ribit went live in beta in February It has run speed-networking events in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Geelong, where students get a chance to meet with at least six to eight senior company representatives each, including CEOs and founders. And we worry, like other researchers in the field, about whether those measured preferences tell us anything at all about real-life mating decisions. Findings like this draw criticism for the way they reinforce tired and oppressive stereotypes. But just because a finding is consistent with stereotype does not make it wrong. Stereotypes, after all, come from somewhere. Yes, the relative importance of various attributes varies with time, place, and the ways in which women and men make their livings economically.
But the pattern is too strong, and too well replicated, to simply wish away. At least it was, until evolutionary psychologists started to get their hands on data from modern speed-dating events. In one important study , both sexes relied almost entirely on physically observable traits: facial attractiveness, body shape, height, age and race. Actual decisions under the frenetic pressure created by speed-dating situations appear not to differ as much as the preferences scientists measure in carefully-controlled laboratory settings.

Scott Morrison came through the crowd like a bad acid trip. He was dressed in a brown bear outfit, the face removed to reveal a beaming, bespectacled mug. People slapped his back, shook his hand and called out “ScoMo”. He approached me and I accepted his hand. The grip was firm like it was when we first met while studying economic geography together at the University of New South Wales three decades ago.
